Merkel, not Biden, can pay for Afghan disaster – 08/24/2021 – Nelson de Sá

In German headlines, in the case of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Chancellor Angela Merkel barely hides her annoyance with Joe Biden, who refused to listen to European allies asking for more time to leave Kabul.

The approval of the US president “plunged” to 41%, according to USA Today, but it could be Merkel, the first electoral victim of the Afghan disaster, with the fall of his elected successor, Armin Laschet. She has been in charge since 2005.

The election is only a month away, but the center-left Social Democratic Party has just overtaken Merkel’s center-right CDU / CSU alliance.

In the appeal of RTL, the country’s leading private television channel, which commissioned the Forza investigation, “the SPD overtakes the Union – after 15 years (!)”. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), this is the lowest percentage in the Union since 1984, when the survey began.

Over the weekend, another poll in the tabloid Bild am Sonntag had already indicated a tie, which resulted in a headline in the FAZ, calling Merkel “desperate”.
