Alabama prison transport van crash: killing two and injuring five others

The identification of the driver of the prisoner transport van that crashed on Wednesday night, killing two and wounding five others, was revealed by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Friday.

Willie Crayton, 60, Jakes Jones, 46, Bruce Clements, 66, Thomas Bass, 44, Heath Garrett, 50, Shawn Wasden, 33, and Richard Jackson, 58, all inmates of the Alexander City Community Based Facility, were making their way back to the facility following work when the accident occurred on Elder Road near Dadeville. That is in Tallapoosa County, roughly two miles northeast of Jackson’s Gap.

About the incident

The van collided at Elder route, a remote route east of State Route 49, according to prison spokeswoman Kelly Betts.

Who was operating the van at the time of the collision and whether anyone was injured were not disclosed by officials.Crayton was declared deceased at the accident scene.

After being sent to a nearby hospital in critical condition, Jones and Clements passed away.Jones was sent to a different hospital so he could receive more care.

According to Betts, the non-life-threatening injuries of the other four prisoners were treated.The cause of the crash and the exact moment it occurred were not disclosed by state jail officials.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is looking into the collision, according to Betts.

Counselors would be accessible to affected staff members and prisoners, according to state officials on Thursday.
