The Institution o f Georgia reported Friday night that a suspect has been brought into custody in relation to the death of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Hope Riley, who was discovered dead on campus. The institution stated that “there are no indications of a continuing threat to the UGA campus related to this matter.”
Who was Laken Riley?
Riley was a 2020 graduate of River Ridge High School and a resident of Woodstock, Georgia. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia in 2023 before enrolling in Augusta University’s nursing school.
She was a member of the track and cross-country teams at her high school and an enthusiastic runner. Superintendent Brian Hightower of the Cherokee County School District also complimented her on being an exceptional scholar-athlete.
She belonged to the sorority Alpha Chi Omega, and she had a tight relationship with her family, who frequently posted about her accomplishments on social media.
How did Laken Riley Die?
Riley was discovered by authorities in an area behind Lake Herrick, and she was declared dead at the scene.
The neighborhood lies across a major road from UGA’s East Campus, which has a sizable complex of dorms and dining halls.
No formal arrest has been made, despite the fact that a man has been brought in for questioning.
UGA officials released a statement saying, “We want to stress that this continues to be an active, ongoing investigation and we will provide further updates when circumstances warrant.”
Clark claims that the police will “not leave any rock unturned in this investigation.”
“There is always a risk when there is an evading suspect.” However, there isn’t a threat right now, he continued.
