The former University of Michigan and Briarcrest High School volleyball coach was declared dead. Since 2016, she has been battling cancer for a long period. Carrie Yerty’s death was reported on social media by John Varlas.
I have some bad news to share. Carrie Yerty, a former Briarcrest and University of Minnesota volleyball coach, died after a lengthy battle with cancer. Carrie Yerty Cause of Death
Carrie Yerty, the state champion Briarcrest volleyball coach, died after a seven-year battle with colorectal cancer. Friends and family have been pouring condolences on social media since the news broke.
Yerty continued to coach the Saints’ volleyball team after her diagnosis, including this past season. Due to her health, she was forced to stand down at the conclusion of the season, and April Jauregui, the assistant coach, took over as a temporary coach. Yerty then announced his Retirement at the end of the season.
Carrie Yerty, State Champion
Yerty joined Briarcrest in 2016 as an assistant coach and stayed for two seasons. When she took over the volleyball program in 2018, she had an immediate impact, leading the Saints to a 40-2 record and a state title. She went on to become the only Briarcrest coach to three-peat, also capturing state titles in 2019 and 2020. The institution also presented her with the Dr Clair E. Cox Award for Teacher Excellence in 2020.
Despite being diagnosed, Yerty went on to coach the Saints volleyball team last season. Due to health issues, she had to step down at the conclusion of the season, and assistant coach April Jauregui replaced her. Yerty opted to retire after the season ended.
Carrie’s Record
Her total record was 134-11. Briarcrest became one of the most prominent programs in the state and country under Yerty’s leadership. The Saints regained state dominance this season, defeating Baylor 3-0 to earn the program’s 10th state championship. Yerty coached college volleyball at Memphis for 12 years, with a 233-174 record. In 2008, she resigned.
“Carrie’s impact will live on in the hearts of our school community and throughout Briarcrest Christian School’s sports history,” Swatley stated.
Yerty coached volleyball at the NCAA Division I level at Eastern Washington, Memphis, Arizona, and Wyoming before coming to Briarcrest, where she was also the elementary school sports director.

Yerty won three consecutive volleyball state titles, but more significantly, she paved the path for her teammates. Carrie Yerty’s impact at Briarcrest is more than her three state victories. It is the ladies she guided and shaped.
