Moeketsi Molelekoa, an assistant referee for the South African Football Association, has sadly gone away.

According to Abdul Ebrahim, the SAFA’s Head of Referees, the official from the Free State passed away in a car accident late on Friday. Ebrahim told iDiski Times that the man had died in a car accident on Friday night. In addition to announcing a moment of silence for the late referee before this weekend’s games, the PSL confirmed the sad news on Saturday morning.

Moeketsi Molelekoa, a PSL match official, passed away, and a statement said, “The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is grieved by this news.” When the Orlando Pirates beat Golden Arrows 3-1 last Saturday at Orlando Stadium, Molekekoa served as the second assistant. His second assistantship in the Soweto Derby in October of last year, when Kaizer Chiefs defeated Pirates 1-0 at FNB Stadium, was another game of note this season.

Additionally, he participated in the COSAFA Cup in Durban in June and July of last year. The official, born in Botshabelo, began to make a name for himself in the professional ranks in 2015 when he competed in matches in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He then moved up the ladder to the DStv Premiership. He has also served his country by competing in the CAF Confederation Cup and CAF Champions League.

What was the identity of Moeketsi Molelekoa?

Born in Botshabelo, Free State, Molelekoa rose to prominence in South African and African football circles after making his PSL debut in 2014. But his refereeing career wasn’t without controversy; in November 2021, he and Jelly Chavani each earned a six-week punishment for making a dubious decision.

The Safa referee review committee determined that the pair had broken Law 12 of the IFAB Laws of the Game during a game in Durban. In stoppage time of that game between AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs, whistleblower Chavani, after consulting with his assistant Molelekoa, issued Amakhosi a penalty. Replays showed that the subsequent spot-kick, which gave the Chiefs the equaliser, was not a handball; hence the ruling was incorrect.

However, Molelekoa had moved on from the incident and became one of the region’s most well-liked match officials due to his impeccable calls and control of the game.

The Orlando Pirates defeated Golden Arrows 3-1 last Saturday at Orlando Stadium, with Molekekoa working as the second assistant. The Soweto Derby, in which Kaizer Chiefs defeated Pirates 1-0 at FNB Stadium while he was second assistant, was another crucial match this year.

He participated in the Durban COSAFA Cup in June and July last year. In 2015, he competed in the Motsepe Foundation Championship before moving up the DStv Premiership ladder, where he established a reputation. He has also played for his nation in the CAF Confederations Cup and CAF Champions League.
