In the first pages of the South China Morning Post in the German Süddeustche Zeitung, the milestone of 500,000 deaths from the coronavirus in Brazil has spread through international news, mingled with demonstrations of “tens of thousands” on Saturday.
In the headline of the London Times, “Protests in Brazil as Death Toll Surpasses Half a Million”. In the Guardian, “New protests against Bolsonaro’s push towards pandemic”. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Le Figaro and other Europeans go in the same direction.
In the United States, CNN’s statement was “Bolsonaro is worse threat than coronavirus, Brazilians say as country has 500,000 dead.” In the Associated Press, per the Washington Post et al, “Brazil is still debating hydroxychloroquine among 500,000 deaths.”
The New York Times, on the other hand, edged ahead of the digital brand on Saturday morning, with the report “Besieged by Covid, Brazil now faces severe drought.” The Financial Times did the same.
In the NYT text, “As 500,000 deaths approach, the drought is jeopardizing the country’s ability to boost its besieged economy and could pave the way for another wildfire season in the Amazon.”
In contrast, the headline of Guancha, from Shanghai (above), celebrated the “crossing” of the threshold of one billion vaccinations in the country. In the English-language newspapers, the Global Times, from Beijing, opted for the statement “China passes the billion mark; the next step is to ensure an optimal immunity effect ”.
In the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, “the increase in vaccination reaches one billion”. Below, “Marco comes after a significant increase in the number of doses in recent weeks, with the country accounting for more than a third of the global total.”
In the United States, CNN described the result as “astonishing” and “mind-boggling” which came “as the country launches an unprecedented vaccination campaign”.
The NYT said on the homepage that “China’s path to a billion doses includes eggs, bottled water, rides and new worry” – with the Delta variant, identified in India and which reached Guangzhou, but “now seems to download”, no new cases.
