Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Joe Biden’s climate summit, but the news in India barely caught on. Headlines throughout the day in Dainik Jagran, India’s largest Hindi-language newspaper, were “devastated” about how “the crisis is getting worse” and “it’s out of control”.
The Times of India, the largest English-language newspaper, was no different, calling the ‘storm’ of Covid and ‘how bad it got’.
Jagran’s subtitle on the night has already highlighted the culprits outside the country, “Rich countries have become major hurdles in the fight against coronavirus.” In short:
“Countries like India and Brazil are deeply shaken by the epidemic, but developed countries are fully engaged in negative vaccine diplomacy. The United States, Canada, United Kingdom and others have joined in. not only committed to locking down their vaccine, but also to prevent the delivery of raw materials to be produced.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga was also at the top, but the news from Japan barely noticed.
Highlighting the “sense of crisis linked to the spread of the virus,” Yomiuri Shimbun, the country’s leading newspaper, reported that the Japanese government “will determine a state of emergency” for the country’s two largest metropolitan areas, Tokyo and Osaka, in addition to two more.
The Asahi Shimbun and Kyodo agency confirmed, saying that Suga’s decision came out this Friday (23), exactly three months before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics – the possible suspension of which made the headlines.
FACE-TO-FACE
The South China Morning Post and the Washington Post made headlines that vaccination in China is believed to have reached 200 million, alongside the United States – both announcing the figures on the same day.
“But China may not meet the target of 40% of the population vaccinated by July,” the SCMP said. And the WP pointed out that a woman, on social media platform Sina Weibo, had reported that she was unable to take the second dose – which is credited with the nationwide effort to get the first dose to as many people as possible.
UP TO BOLSONARO
In the 19th paragraph of the optimistic New York Times central report on the Biden summit, with the image above:
Even Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of Donald Trump who has denied the science of climate change, has pledged to end illegal deforestation, despite overseeing the biggest increase in Amazon destruction in 12 years.”
