On Wednesday (20), the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the country’s First Black and Female Vice President, Kamala Harris, officially took office at the White House.
Outside of the US Congress, security has been stepped up by the military over fears of protests and violent acts – like the Capitol invasion two weeks ago. In addition, due to the pandemic, 200,000 flags have occupied the National Mall in Washington to represent the public who cannot attend.
In a diverse swearing-in ceremony, Biden delivered a speech calling for unity with the American people and extolling democracy. He denounced the rise of extremism and white supremacist movements, and called the attacks in the United States “domestic terrorism”.
During breakfast this Thursday (21), Folha’s Washington correspondent, Marina Dias, analyzes the ceremony and the Democrat’s speech and explains what can be expected from the new government.
