Jolicoeur had recently claimed that he was suffering from congestive heart failure and that a LifeVest machine was permanently attached to him. Trugoy was absent from the stage with the other members of De La Soul during the Grammy Awards’ hip-hop homage last week.

“Rest in peace, dear brother,” the young Guru concluded. You had adoration. @plugwondelasoul We are here for you, my brother, and I love you. Smiles I cherish you, bro. DJ Semtex wrote, “This is wild,” that it was “heart shattering news.”

Jolicoeur was raised in the Amityville neighbourhood of Long Island, but he was born in Brooklyn. There, he met Vincent Mason (Pasemaster Mase) and Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos), and the three of them decided to start a rap group, giving themselves individual names. Yogurt is spelled in reverse as trugoy, according to Jolicoeur. He has been going by Dave more recently.

Prince Paul produced De La Soul’s 1989 Tommy Boy Records debut studio album 3 Feet High and Rising, which was hailed for being a more upbeat and positive alternative to the more intense rap releases of the year before, such as N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton and Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions.

De La Soul heralded the start of alternative hip-hop by drawing influences from everyone from Johnny Cash and Steely Dan to Hall & Oates. Michael Azerrad, a critic for Rolling Stone, referred to it as the first “psychedelic hip-hop record.” Some even referred to them as a hippie group, something the members weren’t too fond of.

The Library of Congress listed 3 Feet High and Rising to the National Recording Registry in 2010.
