Who Was Billy Thomson?

Scottish goalkeeper William Marshall Thomson was born on February 10th, 1958. He played for Dundee United in two Scottish Cup finals and the 1987 UEFA Cup final.

He took the field for Scotland in seven whole international contests between 1980 and 1983.

Before being inducted into the Dundee United Hall of Fame, Thomson made well over 230 appearances for the Tannadice club.

He started in goal for the Tangerines in the 1987 UEFA Cup final and two Scottish Cup finals during some of the best years in the club’s history.

Thomson made his pro debut with Partick Thistle. The young player was well-regarded and gained first-team experience in League Cup and Glasgow Cup games.

He also received the first two under-21 caps for Scotland. In August 1978, a £50,000 offer was made for him. Thistle accepted the proposal. For just one league game, he acted as Alan Rough’s backup up there.

International Profession

Thomson made his full international debut for Scotland against Northern Ireland on May 16, 1980, at Belfast.

Scotland was defeated 1-0 by Billy Hamilton’s goal. Thomson was normally Alan Rough’s backup goalie at this time.

His two appearances after that, both of them were against Northern Ireland (the middle of the three was a 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifier and not the Home Internationals).

Because Scotland had already qualified for the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Thomson took part in the last qualifying match in Lisbon against Portugal. Paul Sturrock scored the opening goal, but Scotland lost 2-1.
