He was ranked 294th overall in his recruiting class, but he was the 5th-best prospect from the state of Oklahoma and the 3rd-best centre in the country. He ended up attending the university with the 3rd-best centre in the country. Nineteen different colleges and universities, including Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech, offered Humphrey scholarships to attend their schools. In June of 2016, he made a verbal commitment to play college football for Texas A&M. However, he later changed his mind and signed a National Letter of Intent with Oklahoma.
