Police in Indianapolis are investigating a shooting after discovering two victims inside a car they briefly pursued on the city’s north side on Thursday afternoon.

Around 2:30 pm, reports of a person lying in the road close to the 3100 block of North Guilford Avenue came in, setting off a flurry of action that involved Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers. Sgt. Genae Cook reported that although police could not see anyone on the road, they saw a red car moving “erratically” away from Guilford Avenue.

The brief pursuit, which involved attempts to halt the automobile and follow it, ended at the intersection of 30th Street and College Avenue, about a half mile away. According to Cook, two people exited the vehicle. One of them, who had been shot in the foot, was transported to the hospital and is doing well.

Unarmed, the second individual to exit the car was brought in for interrogation by the department’s homicide unit. According to Cook, the driver was shot and taken to a hospital, where she later passed away.

On Friday, the Marion County Coroner’s Office identified her as Ranyia Grundy, 17.

Where did Ranyia Grundy end up?

After a brief pursuit on Thursday afternoon on the city’s north side, police in Indianapolis discovered two victims inside the vehicle and are now looking into a shooting. At 2:30 pm, police officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were alerted to a report of a person lying on the road close to the 3100 block of North Guilford Avenue. A flurry of activity followed this.

According to Sgt. Genae Cook, the police could not spot anyone on the road but did notice a red car moving “erratically” away from Guilford Avenue. A brief pursuit by the police that began with an effort to stop the car and ended at the intersection of 30th Street and College Avenue, about a half mile distant, was conducted.

Cook reported that two people exited the car. One was wounded in the foot but could still be transported to the hospital. The second unharmed passenger was brought to the department’s homicide unit for questioning. According to Cook, the driver was shot and taken to a hospital, where she later passed away. On Friday, the Marion County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity as Ranyia Grundy, age 17.

Athlead Indy, Inc. represented Grundy, and they featured pictures and videos of her on their website. Her teammates looked up to her as a fierce rival and a motivating leader. Her coaches and teammates praised her for being a dedicated worker and role model.

Ongoing Investigation

To find out what happened before the event, police kept looking on Guilford Avenue, 30th Street, and College Street. After blocking off the junction of 30th and College at around 3:25 pm, police asked motorists to stay away from the area “for some time.” “This is when our community comes into play,” said Cook, speaking from the scene. “We must work together, and the details you give our detectives and us are essential to solving every crime that occurs,” the police officer said.

Even though the neighbourhood is not in danger, Cook urged anyone with information to come forward. The homicide bureau’s Detective Daniel Hiatt can be reached at 317-327-3475 or [email protected], according to a request made by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Thursday night.
