According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Jesse Navarro, 42, shot and killed Deputy Darnell Calhoun in Lake Elsinore on Friday afternoon.
Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco said that around 4:30 p.m., deputies were sent to the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane for a domestic violence call about a child custody dispute.
Where did the shooting happen?
Calhoun was the first deputy to get there, and shooting happened between him and the second deputy. When the second deputy arrived, Calhoun was lying in the street with several gunshot wounds. Bianco said they didn’t know what happened before the suspect shot Calhoun.
At that point, the suspect and the second deputy started shooting at each other.
Deputy Calhoun was shot in the leg and the chest, and he was taken to the Inland Valley Medical Center, where he died soon after.
Navarro was also taken to the same hospital, and according to the sheriff’s office, he is still in critical condition.
This is the second time an RSO deputy has been killed in a shooting in less than three weeks. On December 29, Deputy Isaiah Cordero was killed in Jurupa Valley.
