A Conversation on Child Marriage With Amnesty International

Although it is a slow process, child marriage is declining. Currently, 700 million women worldwide—or 10% of the world’s population—are still legally wed before becoming 18 years old. In the developing world, a startling one-third of girls under 18 are prostitutes.

Girls who get married too young or forcibly lose their childhood and future. To break the pattern of child marriage, girls who marry young are frequently forced to leave school early. Illiterate girls are more inclined to marry as minors, and uneducated parents are more likely to do the same. This lessens the likelihood that girls will lead fulfilling lives and worsens gender inequity worldwide.

The world community has identified child marriage as one of the most urgent development challenges, and significant attempts have been made to eradicate the practice. The United Nations Human Rights Council acknowledged the violation of human rights caused by child marriage in 2013 and included it in its post-2015 global development agenda. More recently, 13 countries from the Asia-Pacific met in Nepal to sign the Kathmandu Declaration against child marriage, which obligates signatories to set an age requirement of 18 for marriage.

It is not just highly conservative religious or underdeveloped countries that practise child marriage; child marriage also occurs in the West, where ignorance of the problem has allowed it to thrive. Americans are starting to pay attention to the issue, as evidenced by a social experiment that went viral on YouTube and documented New Yorkers’ reactions as a 65-year-old man publicly married an adolescent girl in Times Square, as well as Virginia state senator Jill Vogel’s efforts to advance a bill to outlaw child marriage.
