Former Crystal Palace goalkeeper John Jackson has died at the age of 80.

John Keith Jackson was a goalkeeper in the English Football League who played for Crystal Palace, Leyton Orient, Millwall, Ipswich Town, and Hereford United.

He also played for the St. Louis Star and California Surf of the North American Soccer League.

In March 1962, he graduated from St. Clement Danes School, Jackson joined Crystal Palace as a junior. He also played for Brentford as a child.

He was initially Bill Glazier’s backup, but after Glazier left in 1964, he and Tony Millington successfully contended for the goalkeeping position. He made 222 straight appearances and was constantly present throughout Palace’s first-ever season at the top level in 1968-1969.

Jackson missed just four games during the following four seasons at the highest level. When Palace was demoted in 1973, he transferred to Leyton Orient, where he stayed for six years.

Jackson then spent two seasons with Millwall, one with Ipswich, and the last year of his 19-year career with Hereford United.

His sole league debut came against Manchester United in a game played under enormous pressure because a win kept Ipswich in contention for the League Championship.

Jackson made three critical saves in Town’s 2-1 win, giving him a standing ovation following his first game in the Premier League in seven years.
