Andrzej Iwan was born in Kraków on November 10, 1959. He began his football career there. He was a student of the local Wanda, but his biggest fame came during his time with Wisa, when he made his debut at the age of 17. He wore the club’s colours from 1976 to 1985, solidifying his legacy as a legend.
As a member of Górnik Zabrze, he won three straight titles from 1986 to 1988. He played 269 games in the then-first league (now Ekstraklasa) and scored 90 goals. He previously played for VfL Bochum and Aris Thessaloniki in Germany.
He competed in two World Cups, winning bronze in 1978 and 1982. Iwan played in the first two games of Spain’s tournament against Italy and Cameroon. A catastrophic injury forced him to miss the rest of the season. In 1986, he was just a game away from winning the title, but an injury suffered in a league game forced him to withdraw. He appeared in 29 games for the Polish national team, scoring 11 goals.
He began coaching when his football career ended. He coached younger groups at Wisa Kraków for numerous years. He helped the White Star’s initial coaches, Adam Nawaka and later the tandem Orest Lenczyk – Waldemar Fornalik, from 1999 to 2001.
In June 2002, he was hired as the second coach of Zagbie Lubin, where he worked alongside Adam Nawaka again. However, the coaching staff was fired after less than five months.
Ivan’s next destination in his managerial career was the then-fourth-league Okocimski KS Brzesko, who entrusted him with the club in January 2003. He was a member of the “Ajwain” squad until April 2005, when he was sacked following a string of embarrassing defeats by Okocimski. Iwan won the 4th league gr. Eastern with Brest, but in the final struggle for promotion to a higher class, “Piwosze” had to concede to Kmita Zabierzów’s dominance.

There was terrible news for the Polish football community in the early hours of Tuesday afternoon. Andrzej Iwan died at the age of 63, according to RMF FM.
Despite alcohol and gambling issues, Ivan had an outstanding sporting career. He represented his coun
try, won the Polish championship, and played in the Bundesliga and Greece. There was, however, the flip side of the coin: drink and gambling.
The following years were progressively worse. He did, however, avoid problems. The film “Roulette with Ivan” served as rehabilitation. In this excruciatingly honest documentary, he described his life, including how he wasted money playing roulette and poker and then drowned his sorrows with booze. On the other hand, his family was with him at all times, and it was because of them that he survived the hardest of times.

Andrzej Iwan allegedly suffered from a variety of mental and physical health issues, including alcohol and gambling addictions. He also attempted suicide on several different occasions. He died in his birthplace of, Kraków at the age of 63. This tragic episode was revealed in an interview with Przegld Sportowy Onet by Jaroslaw Krzoska, manager of Wisa Kraków’s first squad. Iwan, who was born in Krakow, represented Poland 29 times in international competitions, including the World Cup in Spain, when Antoni Piechniczek’s squad finished third, achieving one of the two biggest victories in Polish football history.
