She is a famous multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer of Gambia and was born in London in 1983. She is from one of the kora-playing griot families of West Africa and the first female professional kora player from a griot family. She is the cousin of the famous kora player Toumani Diabate.

Jobarteh’s cousin is Toumani Diabate, a well-known and celebrated kora player. Her mother is Galina Chester. She has a son named Sidiki Jobarteh-Codjoe, who was born in 2010.
Since the age of three, she has studied the kora; firstly, her brother Tunde Jegede who is 11 years old, taught her. And with her brother, she travelled many times to the Gambia as a child in a year. Later on, her father, Sanjally Jobarteh, taught her.
She joined the Royal College of Music, there she studied cello, piano and harpsichord, and later on, she moved to the Purcell School of Music to study composition. She also finished a degree at SOAS from the University of London. She is very fluent in Mandinka as well as in English.

Jobarteh also teaches Kora in London. She mostly worked with her father while settling at a formal music school in Gambia.
Film Composer:
As a film composer, she first made her debut in 2009 while creating a soundtrack to a documentary on Africa named Motherland. To capture a unique sound, she made or invented an instrument named Nkoni. This instrument expands the mood of the African musical sonic.
