After a career as a local journalist in the North of England, Clarkson came to public attention in 1988 as the presenter of the original Top Gear format. From the mid-1990s he became a well-known public figure, appearing regularly on British television and presenting his own programs for the BBC and guest appearances on other programmes.

Clarkson has written books and created television shows on subjects including engineering and history in addition to driving. He presented the inaugural season of Robot Wars in 1998, and he also had his own talk programme, Clarkson, from 1998 to 2000.

After Clarkson punched a Top Gear producer while shooting on location in 2015, the BBC chose not to extend his contract. In order to produce The Grand Tour for Amazon Prime Video, Clarkson, his co-hosts, and Top Gear producer Andy Wilman founded the production firm W. Chump & Sons. Clarkson frequently drew criticism from audiences for his outspoken yet hilarious writing and delivery.

His actions—both personally and as a Top Gear host—have occasionally drew condemnation from the public, lawmakers, advocacy organisations, and the media. It also has a sizable fan base and is recognised for playing a significant role in Top Gear’s return as one of the most watched programmes on the BBC.

Jeremy Clarkson Television Career

Clarkson’s first major television role was as one of the presenters of the UK motoring program Top Gear from 27 October 1988 to 3 March 1999 on the programme’s earlier format. Top Gear researcher Jon Bentley helped launch her television career. Bentley soon became the show’s producer and said he hired Clarkson: He was exactly what I was looking for – a passionate automotive writer who could make cars funny on TV.

He was bossy and disrespectful instead of respectfully pushy. It didn’t matter that he looked and sounded exactly like an ex-schoolboy in his twenties. Nor did he feel like he had the slightest hint of being a bully at school. I knew he was the man for the job. Clarkson stood out as being funny.

Even my bosses let themselves laugh from time to time. The revised format of the programme was then delivered by Clarkson from October 20, 2002, to March 8, 2015. He is credited with helping co-presenters James May, and Richard Hammond make Top Gear the most-viewed TV programme on BBC Two, which was then replayed in more than 100 nations. Prior to a change in ownership that transferred full control of the Top Gear rights to BBC Worldwide, Clarkson’s company Bedder 6, which handled retail and global distribution for Top Gear, earned over £149 million in 2012.
