India has shocked the world with the numbers recorded in the new wave of the pandemic raging in the country. Currently, the daily average of Covid-19 cases is over 330,000 and health and funeral systems have collapsed. Hospitals no longer have beds or oxygen to treat the sick – and the dead are collectively cremated.
The situation in the country worsened after the religious festival Kumbh Mela, during which millions of devotees of Hinduism bathe in the Ganges. In addition, election rallies, such as those promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have generated crowds across the country.
At breakfast this Thursday 29, journalist Samaan Lateef reports on the situation in India and what brought the crisis to this point. The episode also has an interview with Folha Patrícia journalist Campos Mello, who explains why the Indian drama is mobilizing the rest of the world.
The audio program is published on Spotify, the streaming service partner of Folha in the initiative and specializing in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking below. To access the application, register for free.
