Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte won a confidence vote in the Senate on Tuesday (19) to stay in power after a small party, Italia Viva, abandoned its coalition last week and spawned a political crisis.
He won the Senate by a tight score of 156 to 140, with 16 abstentions from Italia Viva, a party of former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
Conte had already won the House confidence vote on Monday (18). If he had lost one of the votes, he would be forced to resign.
“We ask the political and parliamentary forces which have Italy’s fate at heart to help us start over as quickly as possible,” he said.
Conte’s term, which began in June 2018, is expected to be difficult to pass amid polarization in parliament, unless he is able to form a larger coalition.
