The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, 72, was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Monday (11). Asymptomatic, he will command the country from his official residence in the Belém district in Lisbon, and will remain isolated, according to an official statement.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa carried out tests every two days. Last Monday (4), according to the Público newspaper, he was in contact with an assistant who received the diagnosis two days after the meeting on Wednesday.
As this was a low-risk contact, the president continued his normal activity following recommendations from health authorities. Since then, he has participated in three debates with other presidential candidates – the country will go to the polls on January 24 and Rebelo de Sousa is running for re-election.
All applicants will go into isolation, at least until the test results. The next meetings on the president’s agenda have also been canceled.
This Monday, Portugal recorded a new record of deaths in a single day: 122. In total, the country has 489,293 cases and 7,925 deaths from Covid-19.
One of the last world leaders to be infected was Igor Matovic, 47, Prime Minister of Slovakia, after meeting with Emmanuel Macron, President of France. Macron, 43, was diagnosed on December 17 and set off a chain reaction of testing and isolation in Europe for attending numerous meetings with other leaders over the preceding days.
The Frenchman resumed his activities at the end of the year, after no longer showing symptoms of the disease.
