The President of the United States, Joe Biden, spoke for the first time with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this Wednesday (10) announced the White House. The conversation took place over the phone.
In the appeal, Biden expressed his “deep concerns” about Beijing’s “unfair and coercive” economic practices, the crackdown in Hong Kong and “human rights violations in Xinjiang,” where the Uyghur Muslim minority lives. . The Chinese leader said he expected the United States to act “cautiously” towards regions ruled by China, as well as Taiwan.
Xi Jinping also told the US president that China and the United States must re-establish dialogue mechanisms to accurately understand each country’s political intentions, so as to avoid misunderstandings and errors in judgment. The Chinese leader also stressed that cooperation was the right choice for the two superpowers.
The two leaders also spoke, according to the White House statement, of the covid-19 pandemic and “common challenges” posed by global health security and climate change.
