Homeland Security Mr. Alejandro MayorkasAlejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security, was the target of a House Republican effort to remove him from office due to his handling of the border between the United States and Mexico.
On Wednesday, the Senate rejected all of the allegations of impeachment against Mayorkas, halting the trial before any arguments could be made.
The articles were submitted to the Senate by House members, notably Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had been chosen as the impeachment managers for the DHS chief’s impending Senate trial. The assembly formed a brief parade.
Mayorkas impeached in February
Due to his management of the southern U.S. border, the House impeached Mayorkas in February in a remarkably close vote of 214–213.
In the Senate, a two-thirds majority would be required to find him guilty, which is all but unthinkable since that Democrats have deemed the Mayorkas case to be without merit.
The articles of impeachment against Mayorkas were presented to the Senate on Tuesday afternoon, when the 11 House Republicans assigned to prosecute the case did the ceremonial walk across the U.S. Capitol and read them aloud on the Senate floor.
What happened in Wednesday?
In order to discuss the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, the Senate convened on Wednesday. Sworn in as jurors were all 100 senators, including Democratic senator from Washington and Senate President Pro Tem Patty Murray.
The second article of impeachment, which claimed Mayorkas “breached the public trust,” was then rejected by the Senate 51-49, with Murkowski voting against it along with her fellow Republicans.
