South West Gauteng College, which operates under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in accordance with the Continuing Education and Training Act, Act No. 16 of 2006, as amended, is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), formerly FET college. Umalusi and a number of Sector Education and Training Authorities (Setas) have granted the College accreditation to provide instruction and training, primarily in the FET band (NQF Levels 2 through 4).
Certain programs are available at the N4 to N6 levels, which correspond to the Higher Education band. With the capability of accommodating more than 30,000 students who have enrolled their faith in the college, the college is also among the largest in the nation.
The head office is located at Molapo Campus, Soweto, and campuses are spread through Soweto (3) to Roodepoort (2) and Randburg (1), including the “LAND IS WEALTH FARM” in Sterkfontein. The College serves as a real citadel of education and training for communities in its wide catchment area and beyond. South Africa’s pride is vested in this college.
The important thing to remember is that colleges now offer three-year vocational qualifications, so students who want to pursue a career in Engineering Studies, Business Studies, or Utility Studies do not need to stay in school until they have completed Grade 12. The only requirement to enroll in this program is passing the minimum grade of 9, but students with higher school grades—Grades 11 or even 12—are better suited for this program.
With great encouragement, The college, with abundant funding from the Department of Higher Education and Training and the government, invested in a program providing “free” education to working-class and impoverished South Africans in 2018 whose combined family annual income was less than R 3,50,000. The free education also makes the college a distinct institution in South Africa and also critically acclaimed.
