In a terrible event that has left the autograss community in shock, three young lives were unfortunately lost last Wednesday night when the red Lexus they were traveling in bumped into a tree and burst into flames. The victims have been described as Daryl Culbert, 21, Katie Graham, 19, and Michael Kelly, 25.
Daryl Culbert, whose real name was Darrell Culbeirt, was well-respected and praised in the autograss racing community. From a very young age, Culbert demonstrated his competitive spirit, especially during his Junior years when he reached the 2018 Junior Specials National Final and earned an amazing 5th place.
After passing the Juniors, Culbert reached Class 10, and in late 2022, he switched to racing CrossKarts. Just a few weeks ago, he was the winner of the Donal O’Brien Memorial Funsprint trophy.
The main mourners included his extremely sad parents, Trevor and Heather; sisters Chloe and Amy, grandad Albert; grandmother Joan; uncles Nigel, Ivan, James, Philip, and David; aunts Janet, Alison, Deirdre, Nicola and Carolyn; cousins, neighbors and friends.
Daryl’s extremely sad dad, Trevor, told mourners: “Everybody who knew Daryl knew he was a quietly spoken chap with a cheeky grin and a lovable glint in his eye, and you couldn’t but love him.
“Daryl is our firstborn, elder brother of Chloe and Amy and grew up in Kiltegan and went to the primary school just next door.”
“Daryl was one of a kind – such a gentle, quite solid son,” said Trevor.
The news of Culbert’s sudden passing has affected the Irish autograss community, with many pouring out their shock and condolences over the loss of such a promising young talent. Culbert was known not only for his competencies and abilities on the track but also for his warm, friendly, and joyous personality.
Our condolences and deepest sympathy go out to the family and friends of Daryl Culbert, Katie Graham, and Michael Kelly during this extremely difficult time. Culbert’s legacy in the autograss community will be remembered and adored by all who knew him.
“We did everything together. He loved and adored his mum, Heather. Daryl, we will love you forever and never forget you,” said Trevor.
