Police have reported that a couple who vanished with their newborn has been detained on suspicion of neglecting the child. On Monday night, officers were able to track down Constance Marten and her partner, Mark Gordon, at Stanmer Villas in Brighton after a part of the public reported seeing them just before 9.30 pm.
Constance Marten’s Baby Is Still Missing
The infant is thought to have gone untreated since birth in early January, according to the Metropolitan Police, who said a quick search operation was underway to locate him or her. Later on, Scotland Yard told the Guardian that Marten, 35, along with Gordon, 48, was being detained on suspicion of neglecting a kid. The two-month-old is currently the target of a massive search, and police are asking people to check in sheds as well as outhouses for any signs of the baby.
Constance Marten’s Father’s Statement
On the Downs, dozens of police have been seen scouring the allotments and golf course at Hollingbury. Pink earmuffs for a child were seen being bagged up by police agents at the allotments. Following the arrests, Marten’s father, the film as well as music producer Napier Marten, said that while he is relieved that his adored daughter Constance has been located, he is also extremely alarmed by the fact that her unborn child has not yet been located. Whatever drove her and her companion to flee, the repercussions of their conduct have multiplied. If they had turned themselves in sooner, it would have been much better.
Since the couple’s vehicle was discovered on fire on the M61 outside of Bolton, Greater Manchester, on January 5, they have been traveling the UK by taxi. Before now, authorities had assumed that the couple had been camped out in a blue tent and had been moving around a lot to escape being discovered by the police. The pair traveled from Bolton to Liverpool, then to east London, Harwich in, and Newhaven in, where they were spotted on January 8 close to the ferry port. The taxi drivers the couple used in the early days after they vanished claimed to have heard sounds emanating from a baby. It is unknown if their child was delivered at full term or if they have any health issues.
Before meeting Gordon in 2016, Marten, who comes from an elite aristocratic family with ties to the royal family, was a bright drama student. The couple has been living apart from their neighbors and family since 2016. They started living on short-term rentals in several Airbnbs around the UK starting around September of last year, and they saved up a sizeable sum of money to allow them to live off the grid and escape law enforcement’s notice.
