Who was Don Shane?
Over his twenty years as a regular on-air personality at WXYZ, Don left an indelible mark on the station and its listeners. From the high of countless wins to the low of sad defeats, he embodied what it meant to be a local sports fan and share those dramatic and emotional moments with the public. People are saddened by Don Shane’s demise
This morning, I have some bad news to share with you. WXYZ has lost its veteran sports director, Don Shane. While I never met or worked with Don, I am remembering his loved ones today. His presence was felt strongly at both Broadcast House and Detroit. That’s really bad news to hear. Many of you may relate to me when I say that I watched Don Shane as a kid. unrivalled as a sports TV staple in the Motor City of Detroit. Please accept our deepest sympathies on behalf of the entire AP Staff to the Shane family.
Goodbye for now. My mom and Bill Bond’s first wife went to the same high school. My mom always said I should go into radio. While I only dabbled with it for a semester at the University of Iowa, I did meet one of the great sportscasters, Don Shane. Playing the games was something he found tremendous joy in. Don Shane has been one of my favourite actors for a long time. He gave an honest account of the excitement, unlike some other sportscasters who tried too hard to stand noticed. There is no question in my mind that I will be missed.
