Outer Banks Season 3 Review: The Pogues Are Back For A Wild Journey

The third season of Outer Banks, which premieres on February 23, won’t bring the Pogues any luckier or any semblance of common reason. Within 20 minutes of the premiere, Netflix’s teen drama The-Goonies-by-way-of-Gossip-Girl snuffs out that optimism.

Cast Of Outer Banks Season 3

Rudy Pankow as JJ, Madison Bailey as Kiara, Madelyn Cline as Sarah, along with the rest of their tenacious gang has been trapped on a faraway Caribbean island dubbed Poguelandia, a mystical, coconut-filled location where neither heat stroke, food intoxication nor a bad hair day can affect them ever since that plane smackdown with Sarah’s gold-hungry dad, Ward Cameron, in the season-two finale. The children mistakenly believe they are being miraculously saved when a seaplane shows up, only to learn that it is being flown by one of Ward’s thugs. This results in a battle in midair, a Sully-style crash landing, and a chase scene with men carrying guns while riding ATVs.

The Pogues are thriving on their own on this island where which they have named “Poguelandia” because naturally, they did, but it cannot take long before the group is “retrieved” and dropped right into the center of another treasure-hunting thrilling activity, this one placing them right away on road to the perished city of El Dorado. They are not, though, alone.

Naturally, Ward as well as Rafe are back for their unique brand of antics, and this season, Carlos Singh, a new outside villain, is also introduced. Singh is extremely wealthy, has a large army of mercenaries at his fingertips, and is driven mad by a vague family grudge to locate El Dorado. Everyone else searching for the gold of El Dorado finds life tough because of him.

Big John Routledge’s Return In Outer Banks Season 3

Big John Routledge returned after his big surprise revelation after Season 2 and is perhaps even more fervent than Singh, John B’s father, in his desire for himself and his son to claim El Dorado for themselves. As usual, a lot is happening. There is only one thing you can be certain of heading into a new season of Outer Banks: you never know how they’re going to land this ship, both metaphorically and occasionally literally. This new season follows the same general pattern as the previous two seasons: It begins with a bang, lags in the middle, and then truly goes hog crazy at the conclusion.

Main Characters Split Up In Outer Banks Season 3

It’s disappointing to see the main characters so frequently split up in Season 3; John B, in particular, spends a significant amount of the narrative with his father. This is because the characters’ chemistry is still enjoyable and convincing. While I can see why Big John needed to be the driving force behind some of the treasure-hunting elements of the season’s plot, Outer Banks is always more enjoyable when the Pogues are coming up with new ideas or working together to solve issues.

The show’s villains this season have a comparable problem. It can be effective to introduce new external antagonists for the Pogues every season; in Season 2, Carla Limbrey, makes a brief and baffling cameo in Season 3, mostly effective because she felt intimidating.

More Ward Cameron is simply best for the Outer Banks. Outer Banks suffered when its similarities to other well-known adolescent dramas from earlier years were overtly apparent at the time of its debut. But as the seasons have gone by, Outer Banks has started to differentiate itself from other adolescent programs by emphasizing adventure. The adolescent angst is entertaining and important for the dramatic high points to land, but what makes Outer Banks captivating is each season’s crazy, completely unfeasible adventure plot.
