Due to a protracted illness, Jim Leahey passed away this morning. For nearly 60 years, his eloquent and constant voice was synonymous with Hawaii sportscasting.
How Did Jim Leahey Died?
The patriarch of our family passed away today, the family said in a statement. A guy renowned for his extraordinary storytelling abilities, unwavering love of Hawaii, its teams, and its athletes, as well as his lifetime devotion for the art of sports broadcasting. Jim Leahey prioritised his family and his faith above all else and was a devoted and caring husband, father, and grandfather.
He cherished seeing the community come together, united, to support the home team. He took great pride in providing the narration for some of the University of Hawaii’s greatest athletic accomplishments. We appreciate everyone.
Best Known For His Voice
Leahey, 80, was best known for being the frequent play-by-play announcer for University of Hawaii athletics on radio and television. But he also presented a number of magazine-style radio and television programmes throughout the years, most notably “Leahey and Leahey” on Hawaii Public Television with his son Kanoa.
He worked many other sports as well, but he was best known for his calls of UH baseball, basketball, and football games.
Leahey stated to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in 2018 that she “was performing as many as seven different UH sports a year in some years.” It was excellent.
As A Voice Of Sports
In 2016, Leahey was admitted into the Sports Circle of Honor at the University of Hawaii.
During that time, Leahey stated, “I enjoyed working with Josh Pacheco and Scottie Robbs, but I’m 75 now and don’t want to take a job from guys who are coming up and working hard.
Leahey taught in the classroom before switching to a career as a full-time sportscaster, most notably at Campbell High School. He kept on instructing covertly, serving as a role model for future generations of sports writers in Hawaii.
