In addition to his sister Jean Marion You and brother William Earl Penny, the actor, poet, and teacher also leave behind six nieces and one nephew. A celebration of life will be held in Birmingham later, the family stated in the tribute posted on the Laughlin Family Funeral home website.

According to AL.com, Penny was a poet who worked as an English professor for three decades, mostly instructing poetry and prose at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Who was Bob Penny?
Penny, an actress, was born in Anniston, Alabama, in 1935. Before starting his acting career, he spent thirty years teaching poetry and English at the University of Alabama.
Penny has made appearances in more than 30 movies and TV programmes. He was referred to be a “crony” in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump,” and in the 2002 film “Sweet Home Alabama,” he played an inexperienced lawyer from a tiny town.
Penny’s previous film credits include “Mississippi Burning,” “My Cousin Vinny,” and “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” in addition to “In the Heat of the Night.”
