Political figure Maropene Ramokgopa, national coordinator of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL), was born in 1980 in South Africa. She serves as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s personal foreign relations advisor. She belongs to the ANC Women’s League as well.
Since the start of the 2000s, the politician has been involved in politics. She has held prominent roles within her party and across the country. She was the youngest mayor in the Eastern Cape when former president Thabo Mbeki appointed her in 2006.
At twenty-six, he has already begun to hold management positions. Thabo Mbeki appointed her executive mayor of the Northern Cape. While serving in this capacity, she was the youngest mayor.
Former President Jacob Zuma appointed her in 2016 to represent South Africa as head of mission at the consulate general in Mumbai, India. He held this position for four years. Since 2008, she has been a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL).
After the dissolution of NEC in 2013, President Jacob Zuma placed her alone in the new ANCYL national task force. In 2008, she was a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).
Ramokgopa co-founded the Young Women’s Bureau and wrote the concept paper. She is currently a member of the PEC of the African National Congress of Limpopo. In 2008, she acted as manager and coordinator of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ANCWL at the national level. While Angie Motshekga was President, she was responsible for the ANCWL National Working Committee.
Maropene Ramokgopa is chief adviser to the South African President at the African Union (AU). According to her, she fought for the position and did not receive it on a silver platter.
Early Life of Maropene Ramokgopa
In 1979 or 1980, Ramokgopa was born in the Limpopo province. She was a former student activist who, at the age of 26, was named executive mayor of a Northern Cape district council in 2006. She was elected to the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League (ANCWL) National Executive Committee in 2008 and held a leadership position in the league under ANCWL chair Angie Motshekga and convened the Young Women’s Office . She also served on the ANC Youth League’s National Executive Committee and was chosen to head an interim task group after the main ANC disbanded the organization’s governing body in 2013.
Later, Ramokgopa was a member of the National Youth Development Agency’s board of directors. 2016 saw the appointment of President Jacob Zuma’s South African consul general in Mumbai, India. President Cyril Ramaphosa nominated her as his Special Adviser on International Relations in the Presidency when she returned to South Africa, where she had previously served as his Chief Advisor to the African Union. She was one of Ramaphosa’s five special envoys sent to see King Mswati in October 2021 during pro-democracy demonstrations in neighbouring Eswatini.
In 2022, she was chosen to serve on the Limpopo branch of the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee. The ANC National Executive Committee appointed the ANCWL Interim Task Team Coordinator at the end of June 2022; in this role, she will co-chair the league alongside task team coordinator Baleka Mbete until she elects a new governing body.
