São Paulo has a Portuguese film festival with free entry – Ora Pois

With a wide selection of contemporary Portuguese film productions, the exhibition “From Portugal to the World” will be presented at the CCBB in São Paulo from July 14 to August 9.

There are 28 films, including shorts and feature films, all with free admission. In addition to the cinema sessions, the event also offers debates with experts and even discussions with some directors.

The show begins with “Vitalina Varela”, by Pedro Costa, still unheard of in the Brazilian commercial circuit.

The feature film has already won a few awards on the international circuit, such as best actress and best photography by the ICS (International Cinepile Society).

The production tells the story of Vitalina Varela, a 55-year-old Cape Verdean who lived for more than two decades awaiting reunion with her husband, Joaquim, who had immigrated to Portugal. She arrives in the country three days after her husband’s funeral and finds herself faced with a very different reality from the one she had idealized.

The curatorship is assured by Pedro Henrique Ferreira, who has chosen to focus on award-winning and internationally successful Portuguese productions, such as “A Portuguesa” (2019), by Rita Azevedo Gomes; “Taboo” (2012), by Miguel Gomes; “The strange case of Angelica” (2010), by Manoel de Oliveira.

Another highlight is “Balada de um Batráquio” (2016), by Leonor Teles, which won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival. The documentary with innovative language talks about the tradition of putting tableware frogs in shops and restaurants as a way to chase away gypsy customers.

Due to the health restrictions of Covid-19, there will be no ticket office on site. All tickets must be booked through the website.

In addition to the compulsory wearing of the mask during the sessions, the rooms will have a maximum capacity of 50% occupancy and a distance of two meters between the seats.
