During the recent Peruvian electoral process, while Pedro Castillo was campaigning for the second round, tensions were generated between the two left-wing parties: Ensemble pour Peru, led by Veronika Mendoza, and Peru Libre de Castillo. It was a difference when it came to issues of gender, sexual and reproductive health. The two political forces had just signed an agreement, but one opened a wedge between what Peruvian elected official Betsy Chávez called the “popular” left and the “progressive” left.
