Since December 2019, a crisis has caused a rupture in the universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Angola. The friction resulted in a movement of local bishops and pastors who last year took control of temples in the African country – and made a series of denunciations against Brazilians.
The last chapter of this crisis occurred in mid-May, when 34 Brazilians linked to Universal’s missionary work received notification from authorities in Luanda that they would be deported.
The crisis provoked a mobilization. On Monday (17), during a meeting with the Itamaraty command, the Evangelical Parliamentary Front demanded that the Jair Bolsonaro government lead a categorical defense of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Angola.
The Bolsonaro government has already indicated its support for the church in the conflict, sending a letter to the Angolan president. But evangelical leaders internally assess that efforts have been timid.
In this Wednesday (19) episode of the Café da Manhã podcast, journalist Gilberto Nascimento, author of the book “O Reino – The Story of Edir Macedo and an X-ray of the Universal Church”, talks about the background of the expansion of the Universal Church in Africa, its relation to power and the crisis in Angola.
