At least 11 people were killed in a shooting at a school in the Russian city of Kazan on Tuesday (11), according to local media. The total number of injured has not yet been released.
One of the snipers was killed and the other arrested, the Russian press reported. “The second assailant who attacked the Kazan school and hid in the building was killed,” a security source said.
The RIA news agency said an explosion was heard at the school. Images posted on social media showed a young man immobilized by a police officer near the building.
Attacks on schools are rare in Russia. One of the last major such attacks took place in the annexed territory of Crimea in 2018, when a university student killed 19 people before committing suicide.
Kazan is the capital of the predominantly Muslim region of Tatarstan and is located approximately 725 km east of Moscow.
