Viaduct collapses, overturns metro killing at least 15 in Mexico

At least 15 people have died and 70 were injured in the collapse of an overpass where a Mexico City metro train passed on Monday evening (3), officials said.

The figures were confirmed by the mayor of the Mexican capital, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The accident involved the metro cars, which crossed the bridge, as well as cars that were under the viaduct.

The injured were transferred to several hospitals in the city, added the mayor at the scene of the tragedy, where part of the train could be seen suspended from the bridge.

Sheinbaum said the accident happened when a beam from Olivos station, on metro line 12, gave way.

Videos on TV and social media showed emergency medics and firefighters combing the wreckage for survivors.

Metro line 12 was built when Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard was mayor of Mexico City.

“What happened today with the metro is a terrible tragedy. My solidarity with the victims and their families,” Ebrard said on Twitter. “Of course, the causes must be studied and the responsibilities defined. I reiterate that I am at the disposal of the authorities to help them in whatever is necessary ”.
