Chinese PhD Student at UCL Jailed for 24 Years After Secretly Drugging and Raping Women in UK & China

In a case that has horrified both the UK and China, a highly educated PhD student from China has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 24 years, for drugging, raping, and filming at least 10 women across two countries. What makes this even more chilling is how the man, Zhenhao Zou, used his charm, intelligence, and dating apps to trap his victims—many of whom were unconscious during the attacks.

Who Is Zhenhao Zou?

Zou, 28, was a PhD student in mechanical engineering at University College London (UCL). He appeared to be a model student—intelligent, polite, and respected by peers. But behind closed doors, he lived a double life as a serial sexual predator.

He used dating apps and messaging platforms like WeChat to contact women. Often, he would invite them over for what seemed like an innocent meet-up—like coffee or studying—only to drug their drinks, making them completely unconscious. He would then rape, film, and even keep digital “trophies” of his crimes.

What the Court Revealed

In March, Zou was convicted of 28 serious offences, including:

  • 11 counts of rape

  • False imprisonment

  • Voyeurism

  • Possession of extreme pornography

During the police investigation, officers discovered an enormous amount of evidence:

  • Over 1,600 hours of recorded video of unconscious women being abused

  • Footage from hidden cameras

  • Powerful sedatives stored in his apartment

  • Messages with disturbing comments about his victims

Judge Rosina Cottage called Zou a “dangerous, manipulative predator” and said his actions showed a total lack of empathy or remorse.

What the Victims Said

Several victims bravely shared how the attacks destroyed their lives. One woman said:

“I feel empty. I feel I will never be the same person again. My trust in people is gone.”

Many said they had no memory of the assault and only learned the truth when police contacted them after discovering the footage.

Global Impact and More Victims

Since the trial, 24 more women—from both the UK and China—have come forward, saying they were also victims. Police now believe that Zou may have attacked up to 50 women or more. The investigation is ongoing.

Detectives are urging anyone who might have met Zou between 2019 and 2024, especially through dating apps or student networks, to contact authorities.

What This Means

This case has raised serious questions about:

  • The safety of dating apps

  • How predators hide in plain sight

  • The need for stronger awareness among international students

The fact that a seemingly kind and educated student was living such a dark secret life is terrifying—but his victims have now been heard, and justice has started.
