Butler and Kelley were last seen in a vehicle together on March 30 before disappearing, according to a missing persons alert issued by the Texas County Sheriff’s Department. According to CBS affiliate KWTV, they drove from adjacent Kansas to take up Butler’s children. The missing persons warning stated that neither “made it to the pick-up location.”

Butler was involved in a custody fight, according to KWTV, although it is unclear whether this was related to her abduction.

According to the state’s bureau of inquiry, the women’s automobile was discovered abandoned by the side of the road at Oklahoma State Highway 95, close to the border between Oklahoma and Elkhart, Kansas.

A few days after the automobile was discovered, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation stated, “Investigators believe there was evidence to indicate foul play.” It did not specify what the evidence was.
