Japan finally screens ‘Oppenheimer’ Eight months after a contentious grassroots

Eight months after a contentious grassroots marketing campaign and worries over the movie’s nuclear theme’s reception in the only nation to experience atomic bombardment, “Oppenheimer,” the winner of the best picture award, finally made its Japanese debut on Friday.

The biggest winner of this month’s Academy Awards, Christopher Nolan’s film about American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who spearheaded the race to develop the atomic bomb, has made about $1 billion in box office receipts worldwide.

About the film Oppenheimer

The film, which stars Cillian Murphy in the lead role, is based on the biography of American theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer. During World War 2, he was the one in charge of creating America’s first nuclear weapons.

According to reports, the movie brought in over 950 million USD globally, making it the third highest-grossing movie of 2023.
Despite being released in theaters opposite Barbie, starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, the movie was a major box office hit. In July of last year, Oppenheimer was released in theaters.
