Escalating Waters In The Red Sea Crisis: Recent Developments

The current military confrontation known as the Red Sea crisis started on October 19, 2023, when Israel was targeted by a volley of missiles and armed drones fired by the Houthi movement in Yemen, which is supported by Iran. The Houthis have repeatedly seized cargo ships that are managed by civilians and are cruising close to Yemen’s shore.

They have also declared that any shipping that is associated with Israel is their target, despite the fact that several ships that are not connected to Israel have also been assaulted. According to Houthis, they won’t give up until Israel ends its conflict with Hamas. The Red Sea issue is a component of a larger American-Iranian proxy conflict.

Located south of the Suez Canal, the main waterway linking Europe with Asia and East Africa, is the Red Sea, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Yemen is located on its southeast coast, where the sea meets the Gulf of Aden.

Recently, the US Military has fired the fourth wave of missiles this week, increasing the stakes of the conflict . The sites were said to hit the Red Sea areas. Hodeidah, Taiz, Dhamar, al Bayda, and Saada were the regions targeted.

Since November, global powers have been frightened, and trade between Asia and Europe has stalled due to attacks on ships in the area by the Houthi militia, which is backed by Iran. Most of Yemen is under the Houthis’ control, who claim they are supporting the Palestinians in Gaza.

Aden’s administration, in the meantime, fired its prime minister and appointed Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, a staunchly anti-Houthi foreign minister, in his place. Mubarak, who has a great deal of expertise, is skeptical of Saudi Arabia’s intentions to negotiate a peace agreement with the Houthis in order to officially end the civil war in Yemen. He announced last Thursday that members of Iran’s al-Quds force had been sent to the coast of Yemen.

The reorganization will be a reflection of US concerns about the caliber of the nation’s anti-Houthi coalition. A diverse eight-member presidential leadership council, some supported by Saudi Arabia and others by the United Arab Emirates, is in charge of the prime minister.
