Russian Opposition Leader Navalny Dies

Jailed Russian opposition-determined and outspoken Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny, who made international headlines when he became poisoned with a nerve agent in 2020, has died aged forty-seven, the Russian prison carrier stated.

The reason for his reported demise remained unclear. However, the news drew a forceful reaction from Western leaders Friday, including US President Joe Biden, who pinned the blame on Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that “what has happened to Navalny is but more proof of Putin’s brutality.”

Navalny returned to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he was treated after being poisoned with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent. On arrival, Navalny was unexpectedly arrested on charges he dismissed as politically prompted.

He has been incarcerated ever since, with longstanding issues for his welfare growing more severe after he became transferred to a penal colony north of the Arctic Circle.

On Friday, the Russian prison carrier stated Navalny “felt sick after a walk” and “almost at once” misplaced attention. It stated it became investigating his “unexpected death.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin has been informed of the reports and that it is for medical doctors to determine the cause of Navalny’s death.

“As far as we’re aware, according to all of the policies, the jail provider is carrying out checks and clarifications,” Peskov advised newshounds. Asked about reviews that the death concerned a blood clot, he answered: “I don’t recognize. Doctors should discover it.”

Navalny shocked his family and supporters when he appeared in court via video link on Thursday and joked with the judge that he got short of money.

Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, initially said lawyers for Putin’s critics had gone to Hap, where Navalny has been detained since December. “As quickly as we’ve got any statistics, we can record it,” Yarmysh wrote on X.

She later stated the reviews of Navalny’s death were “most probably true.”

Navalny’s wife, Yulia Navalnaya, meanwhile, referred to as Putin to be added to justice.

“I need them to understand that they’ll be punished for what they have achieved with our U. S .A., with my family, and with my husband,” she said in emotional remarks that brought about a standing ovation at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), including that she no longer had affirmation of her husband’s death.
