Rapper and activist Killer Mike was arrested by police on Sunday evening after earning 3 trophies at the Grammy Awards.
Rapper and social activist Killer Mike was arrested on Sunday evening near the venue of the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on a night when he took home three trophies at the Grammy Awards.
The rapper, whose real name is Michael Render, Mike was handcuffed and arrested by Los Angeles police at Crypto.com Arena after some joyful moments for him at the Grammys’ Premiere on Sunday, where he won three awards.
Police representative Mike Lopez said Mike was detained because he was booked on a misdemeanor battery charge around 4 pm inside the arena.
The department said that Killer Mike was handcuffed and detained for a physical altercation that took place in the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court, which is attached to the Crypto.com Arena where the Grammys were held on Sunday, before being detained, taken to the LAPD Central Division.
The 48-year-old was “in the procedure of being released” as of Sunday evening local time, according to the department.
Killer Mike is one half of the legendary rap duo as a member of Run the Jewels. The rapper won three Grammys on Sunday, including Best Rap Album for “Michael,” Best Rap Performance, and Mike’s first win for Best Rap Song as “Scientists and Engineers.”
The Grammy-winner anchors Netflix’s “Trigger Warning with Killer Mike,” a 2019 documentary series about the problems that affect the black community. He also made an emotional appeal to calm a protest against the police fierceness that turned violent in Atlanta.
“The main thing that restricts your age isn’t being honest about your age or what you’re doing,” the 48-year-old Mike said behind the stage. He won for best rap performance, rap song, and rap album.
“At 20 years of age, I thought it was cool to be a drug dealer,” he said. “At 40, I began to live with regrets, thoughts, and the things I’ve done. At 45, I began to rap. At 48, I stand here as a man loaded with compassion and compassion toward the things I’ve done.”
