Former “Saturday Night Live” star Dana Carvey‘s son Dex Carvey, an aspiring comedian, died at the age of 32 in November. The official cause of death has been revealed.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the initial statement by his father and mother, Paula Zwagerman, in November when he passed away, determining on Tuesday that the actor died of an accidental drug overdose. The statement from Dana and Paula Carvey said, “Last night, we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old.”
The report said that he died from a lethal combination of fentanyl, ketamine, and cocaine and did not reveal any additional causes or significant conditions.
The actor’s parents, Dana Carvey and Zwagerman, said, “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things — music, art, filmmaking, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately.” He “loved his family, his friends, and his girlfriend, Kaylee. Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.” They added, “To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers.”
Kaylee, Dex Carvey’s girlfriend in the evening of November 15, when Dex had locked himself in the bathroom and was not responding, called 911, authorities said.
Dex Carvey performed in some of the projects like the miniseries “Beyond the Comics” and “The Funster.” Dex opened for Dana’s 2016 Netflix special, Straight White Male. The Weird Place, a sci-fi comedy podcast-adventure, was also released by Dana and his sons in 2022.
Carvey spoke in a new podcast episode of Fly on the Wall about his “private journey” of healing after the loss of his son with his wife and younger son Thomas. “We’re all together,” he said. “And we do a lot of fun things. We hike, we go to church. You just want to make sure you keep moving.”
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported that due to fentanyl (a synthetic opioid), more than 60% of all accidental drug or alcohol overdoses took place in 2022. This report came out in December.
