The Grand Ole Opry on Jan. 19 celebrated Dolly Parton’s 78th birthday at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium following a night of performances. Musicians performed her hits in tribute, even though the country legend herself wasn’t present for the Opry Goes Dolly event.
Alongside musicians like Lauren Alaina, Ashley Monroe, Tigirlily Gold, Dailey & Vincent, and Terri Clark, Elle King was also a part of the show in order to honor Dolly Parton’s 78th birthday. Alaina pulled out from the performance before it began. Elle King dismayed the night as she came onstage in an inebriated state. “I’ll tell you one thing more: Hi, my name is Elle King, and I’m fucking hammered.” She said.
King performed “Marry Me,” a song by Patron, and it seemed as if she forgot the lyrics, “I don’t know the lyrics to these things in this fucking town… Don’t tell Dolly ‘cause it’s her birthday.”
With her intoxication and language, fans shared their displeasure with her. As a person from the audience tweeted, “It was such a disappointment to spend $300 on tickets for a show where one of the artists ruined an entire night,” the user continued in another tweet. “I mean, it’s The Opry, the greatest country venue in the world. That performance was like lackluster karaoke performer wasted out of their minds. Awful.”
Another said, “Elle King ruined the night with her horrible, drunk, and profane performance. Dolly Parton would’ve been mortified. For our first time at The Opry, it was a shame we all had to witness that.”
King also told her fans expressing disbelief that how could anyone buy these tickets and asking: “Holy shit. I’m not even going to fucking lie. Y’all bought tickets for this shit?”. And said that they won’t be getting any refund. To this, when one fan responded that they wouldn’t want their money back, she hit back by saying, “Good, ’cause you ain’t getting it.” Money they got from selling the tickets was put towards the Opry trust fund in Dolly Patron’s honor.
Venue’s account tweeted on X(formerly Twitter) with an informal apology for this dismay caused at the event: “Hi Judas, we deeply regret and apologize for the language that was used during last night’s second Opry performance.”
