Beverly Johnson discusses the hideous facts of her young modeling profession.
Becoming the first Black woman who appeared on the cover of the magazine Vogue in the year 1974, the 71-year-old actress and fashionista earned prominence, but she admits that reaching the peak of her professional life was not easily attained. Johnson admitted that she had taken cocaine to preserve her thin physique after receiving guidance from executives in the industry that she should appear “chiseled to the bones” for image events. The disclosure emerged during an appearance on television honoring the 50th anniversary of her legendary achievement.

Beverly Johnson’s mother pulled her to gaze in a three-way reflection for the first time, where she noticed how poor her physique was.
Notwithstanding knowing that modeling contributed to her dependence on drugs, she claims she remains happy to have been the first Black woman to be featured on the front page of Vogue. “In that era, you didn’t know if you were going to appear on the front page until you were actually on the cover,” she informed CBS on the 50th anniversary of her Vogue cover. “I appreciate it. “I’m extremely proud,” she said.
Making History As The First Black Woman Featured On The Cover Of Vogue
While featured on the magazine’s cover, the famous model needed a moment to fully understand what she had accomplished.
“It was not before I saw myself as the initial Black woman on the front page of Vogue that the significance hit me,” she even said, “I researched and examined all of this about racial prejudice,” she said, mentioning the fact that she was brought up in a virtually all-White area in the city of Buffalo, New York.
She is scheduled to recount her entire story in a one-woman off-Broadway production entitled “Beverly Johnson: In Vogue” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of her initial publication in the magazine.
Johnson has maintained sobriety for 50 years.
