Lea DeLaria married her fiancée Dalia Gladstone in secret. The “Orange Is the New Black” actress, best known for playing prisoner Carrie “Big Boo” Black in the Netflix prison drama, officially announced the development this week when she referred to her partner as her “wife.”
Who Is Lea DeLaria?
Lea DeLaria is a comedian, actor, and jazz musician who has a varied career. With her 1993 debut on The Arsenio Hall Show, the “famously controversial” DeLaria became “the first openly gay comic to break the late-night talk-show barrier.” She has been doing stand-up comedy for almost three decades and is well-known in the LGBT comedy community.
She plays the role of Big Boo on the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, which she says was made especially for her and makes her think of herself. “It just feels so me. What makes it wonderful is that. They merely write for me. They are writing only for me.
Early Years
The daughter of Jerry DeLaria, a housewife, and Robert DeLaria, a jazz pianist and social worker, Italian-American DeLaria was born in Belleville, Illinois, in the United States. She attended St. Mary’s Elementary School in Belleville from kindergarten through eighth grade and has made references to her Catholic upbringing in her performances.
Growing up in a St. Louis suburb, she has been around music since she was a young child. By the time she was 10 years old, her jazz musician father would take her on stage and have her perform “Summertime” after noticing her interest in singing.
Her passion in acting changed in high school, and she went on to pursue a career in theatre that includes parts in such diverse works as Happy Days by Samuel Beckett, an episode of Friends, and the Broadway revivals of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and On the Town.
They Tied Not
Lea referred to Dalia as her “wife” while speaking to the New York Post’s Page Six column on Monday night (03.04.23) at the Miscast23 event. When asked about the couple’s nuptials, Lea said, “Aaaaah… no comment.”
She sarcastically retorted, “Yeah, we can if we want to,” when it was jokingly suggested she couldn’t just say, “no comment,” regarding such significant news. You’ll move past it. It’s not a major issue. I’m simply an old-school gay, don’t make this interview about this. I don’t believe everyone needs to be aware of my company.
Lea was previously engaged to Chelsea Fairless in 2017, but they broke off their engagement two days before the wedding. “Please exclude us from the tragic and basic celebrity breakup narrative,” they said at the time on Instagram. For four years, we had a lovely relationship and will always be close. In fact, we relish coming up with new methods to punish one another. We appreciate all of our wonderful friends and families’ love and support.
Engaged In 2015
The couple used a wedding photo of the late David Gest and Liza Minnelli alongside Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor as well as Roxette’s 1987 hit song “It Must Have Been Love” to announce their breakup.
They were engaged in February 2015, and Lea said: “It’s going to be in New York, but we’re still looking for the location! We’re having a nighttime wedding and starting the dancing right away. It is safe to say that it will either be the season’s biggest event or a complete worse show.
