Roy McGrath, who served as the former head of staff for former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, passed away after a confrontation with the FBI in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Monday, according to McGrath’s lawyer.
What Happened To Hogan?
“The FBI has verified that Roy is no more due to the wounds he received earlier in the evening. Three weeks of doubt have a tragic conclusion, said attorney Joseph Murtha in a statement to CNN. It’s crucial, in my opinion, to emphasise that Roy has always maintained his innocence.
William Brennan, a counsel for McGrath’s wife, told CNN that his client was “absolutely distraught” and that McGrath passed away in a Tennessee hospital following “a confrontation with the FBI.”Both lawyers were unable to offer any additional information about the circumstances regarding McGrath’s passing.
In a statement released earlier on Monday, the FBI stated that it was “reviewing an agent-involved shooting that happened on Monday, April 3, 2023, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Roy McGrath, the target of the arrest, was taken to the hospital after suffering an injury.
The agency “takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously,” according to the statement. The FBI’s Inspection Division is looking into the shooting event in accordance with FBI protocol.
The Agency Withheld Any Additional Information Regarding The Arrest
According to prior reports from CNN, McGrath was accused of participating in a scheme to defraud Maryland out of more than $276,000 during his time as Hogan’s senior aide during the summer of 2020. According to a statement made last month by the US Marshals Service, McGrath entered a plea of not guilty to all counts and was granted bond.
After he failed to show up for his planned trial in Baltimore in March, an arrest warrant was issued for him. Initially charged with wire fraud and embezzling money from a company getting more than $10,000 in government benefits, McGrath was also accused of fabricating records in a superseding indictment that was returned in June 2022. According to the Justice Department, he was accused of breaking the state’s wiretap statute and of felony theft. The FBI had promised a reward of $10,000 for intelligence that resulted in McGrath’scapture.
