With at least 200 made three-pointers this season, Jordan Poole joined colleagues Klay Thompson as well as Steph Curry. The Golden State Warriors are the second club in NBA history to have three players achieve the feat in a single season.
Jordan Poole’s Score
Steph Curry had 285 three-pointers last year, while Poole made 211. Klay Thompson settled for 114 despite not having played until January of last year. The three joined the 2016–17 Houston Rockets along with James Harden, Eric Gordon, and Ryan Anderson this season after remaining largely healthy. Jordan Poole was a stroke of fate for the defending NBA champions. He was selected by the Warriors with the 28th overall selection in the 2019 NBA Draft, drawing criticism from several analysts. He was the undiscovered gem for Golden State and is only now beginning to reach his full potential.
Every one of Poole’s 4 seasons with the Golden State Warriors has seen an increase in his scoring total. In 78 games, which is the most on the squad, he has an average of 20.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. The fielding percentage for “JP” is 43.0%, including 33.6% from the long range. The four-year guard has proven to be versatile, especially when the Warriors are coping with injury problems. Klay Thompson’s absence has seen him play with Thompson or Steph Curry when Thompson isn’t available.
Jordan Poole’s Flexibility
Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Warriors, occasionally deploys a three-guard group with all three shooters. An aspect of Golden State’s lethal firepower that is frequently ignored is Jordan Poole’s flexibility. On defense, Steph Curry was frequently pursued by rival teams. Teams use their offensive approach to contain “Chef Curry” when they have that goal in mind. Curry would be worn out by screens, be matched up against larger players, or simply forced to work hard defensively.
The trick used to work, but rival teams no longer regularly use it. To at least avoid being overpowered on defense, the two-time MVP has increased his conditioning, strength, and defense. Klay Thompson experienced the same thing after recovering from two severe injuries. Poole will face a similar exam and must demonstrate his ability to get past this type of challenge. The Boston Celtics got the benefit of Poole’s poor defense in the NBA Finals last season. Steve Kerr enjoyed taking him out multiple times.
