Coach Lindsay Whalen Leaves The University Of Minnesota

Alumna of Hutchinson High School Lindsay Whalen addressed a large crowd of admirers in 2018 at a ceremony to devote the new gym to her. After five seasons as the University of Minnesota‘s women’s basketball coach, Whalen revealed her resignation on Thursday.

Who Is Lindsay Whalen?

Lindsay Whalen, the head coach of the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team, made the announcement on March 2. Whalen, a native of Hutchinson, said that although coaching at Minnesota had been “an honour of a lifetime,” the moment had come for her to step down from the position she assumed in 2018.

According to a press release from Athletics Director Mark Coyle, Whalen will continue to serve as a special assistant to the athletic director. I have so much regard for Lindsay,” Coyle declared. “I want to express my gratitude to Lindsay for her commitment and hard effort both as a basketball player and as the team’s head coach.

Her Gratitude To Mark

She is one of the greatest graduates and representatives of this institution who has ever lived, and her reputation as a Minnesota legend is indelible.” Whalen played for Minnesota from 2000 to 2004, compiling a 71-76 record while there. She was the first three-time All-American in programme history. She guided the Gophers to the team’s lone Final Four appearance.

I want to express my gratitude to Mark and the university for giving me the chance to oversee this initiative five years ago, said Whalen. “I want to express my gratitude to my team and assistant coaches for everything they have done for our student-athletes over the past five years. We handled everything properly and made a lot of memories, but it’s time for me to stand down and resume my role as a proud alum. I’m excited to support and clap for the incoming head coach.”

Her Basketball Career

When the Gophers fell to Penn State 72-67 on March 1 in the opening round of the Big Ten Conference tournament at Minneapolis’ Target Center, it was Whalen’s last game in charge of the team. Gophers lost.

During Whalen’s five seasons as coach, the Gophers never finished above.500 in Big Ten Conference play; their best performance came in her inaugural campaign, when they recorded a 9-9 record and placed sixth in the conference.

Whalen began her basketball career as a star for the Tigers high school squad in Hutchinson. She later attended the University of Minnesota and played in the WNBA for the Minnesota Lynx, where she won four out of five league titles.
