What happened to Ryheam Damon Brown? Why are Police are involved

On Thursday evening, February 2, 2023, the Lynchburg Police Department received multiple reports of shots fired in the 700 block of Grady Street. The incident resulted in the death of 25-year-old Ryheam Damon Brown, a resident of Lynchburg, following an officer-involved shooting. Incident Details

The Lynchburg Police Department responded to the scene, and an officer attempted to stop a vehicle believed to be involved in the disturbance. However, the driver, who was the only occupant of the car, took off and tried to evade the police. The driver ultimately got out of the car and rushed into the Pierce and 14th Street neighbourhood. After a brief foot chase, the officer located the subject in an alleyway in the 1400 block of 17th Street.

According to the LPD, the suspect pulled out a pistol and was shot by the officer. Before the Lynchburg Fire Department arrived to take the wounded suspect to Lynchburg General Hospital, officers did all in their power to save his life.

WDBJ7 spoke to a neighbour who has lived in the area for 13 years and described what she heard the night of the incident. Maggie Elliott expressed her sadness for the family and stated, 

“I just give my regards to his mama cause I know and dad I know you know that they’re all sad and stuff. I just want them to keep their heads held up and everything cause I’m going to keep him in my prayers.”

The Lynchburg Police Department was officially established in 1866 after the end of the Civil War. The City Council adopted an ordinance to establish a “Police Force for the City of Lynchburg.” However, there have been police officers protecting the city for as long as there has been a city of Lynchburg.
